Another lost talent from Malaysia – Pen Drive Founder Pua Khein-Seng

At the recent local newspaper, it has known that the founder of pendrive is a Malaysian. Yes, indeed, Malaysian is the one that invented the pendrive(a thumbdrive, usb flash memory, etc or whatever u named it), Mr Pua Khein-Seng, the pride and proud of an Malaysian Entrepreneur (click here for more info). I felt proud for the moment when I was reading the articles that how Pua made his way up when he started his company (PHISON ELECTRONIC CORP) in Taiwan while he was only 27. I googled around and search for his profile and I came out to a very ironic information (which i do not know how true it was), that Pua was a rejected student from the local university, and even though his proposal of his USB flash memory (pendrive) was also rejected by Malaysian authorities, and he was force to stay back in Taiwan to start his invention. a Malaysian Entrepreneur which was not in MALAYSIA.

Today, PenDrive or USB Flash memory, has revolutionize the era of floppy disk and storage in the world of computer. As an inventor, just only by receiving licensing revenues from different manufacturer would have made how many billions of dollars from around the world. However, the most ironic thing is this, it is claimed to be a “TAIWAN TECHNOLOGY” instead of “MALAYSIA TECHNOLOGY“. First of all, the technology is patented under a TAIWAN company, funded and invented in TAIWAN, hence, it is a TAIWAN TECHNOLOGY. This is just one “in your face” disgraced for MSC MALAYSIA, that has missed an opportunity to sparkle and polish Malaysian capabilities that all pendrive around the world is a MALAYSIA TECHNOLOGY. Apart from that, the millions and billions of dollars that has flown into the TAIWAN company which is worth RM4.1Billion, instead of a MALAYSIA company has really really sadden me off. Arggg…..I am so sad, so angry, the money, the pride, the proud~~ gosh, all gone to TAIWAN~! You can’t blame Pua. Now, whether is it for 1Malaysia, reporters has been running around to spot out entrepreneurs that has lost from malaysia, asking them, “Will you be coming back? do you still love your country? will you bring back your business?”, i think most will answered, yes, I love my country, i will be back. In terms of bringing back the business, hmmm, what will be the offer from the country? My business is well established out of malaysia, whats for the hassle to bringing it back?

I was wondering, if Pua managed to do this in Malaysia, will it be the same achievement as he has in Taiwan now? so? the pride, the proud or the shame?

I am surprised too Mike. He owns the Technology for pendrive.

I admire him too, but then again, today’s growth also shows that a super genius move in business can easily and quickly be eaten out alive too, not everyone of them will become Bill Gate, it may take some ‘dirty’ moves to stay on ….

If indeed he is the inventor, how is it that he and his accomplishments are not registered in http://www.wikipedia.org?

  5. admin on November 13th, 2009 12:58 pm

Hi Richard, I wonder why isn’t registered under wikipedia. but it appears in the local papers stating that the first USB flash drive in the global market was invented by him. you can check this out: http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2009/9/5/business/4602288&sec=business

It mention Pua, Natec and Trak. What Pua invented is the System-On-Chip for USD interface, which makes all these USB drive thingy possible…

A great achievement… and definitely a lose of Malaysia.

Another familiar story which happened to chinese malaysian.M’sia govt doesnt know how to treasure talents. Our govt is expert in playing politic games or spending lots of money to send an astronaut to travel in space. They’re living in fantasy world and reluctant to see things soberly…I wonder when they will be more realistic and take action to breakthrough the stagnation.

Pua Khein-Seng should give up his Malaysian citizenship and take up Taiwan citizenship or migrate to United States.

  12. Sad Ex-Malaysian on August 31st, 2010 1:17 am

I’m so glad that Malaysia got a such talented Chinese guy. Sadly the government doesn’t know the importancy of keeping those genius. I will not feels bad if Pua give up his Malaysian citizenship someday because he deserve for a better treat.

  14. YM on September 3rd, 2010 7:17 pm

Just wonder even if the proposal was initially accepted and supported by Malaysian authorities, would this pendrive thing eventually manage to goes into production and market across the globe under the Malaysian’s way of handling it? Hmmm something to think about…

  15. Jude on September 14th, 2010 4:38 pm

new fact to me..but I did remember I bought my first pendrive in early 2004, 128MB for almost RM100!
psstt..If it is a Malay guy I am sure this situation would be treated differently**

  16. fiona on September 16th, 2010 11:44 pm

    a total loss 4 malaysia..
just thinking bout the dollars gained from the sale of the pendrives,it could be a such bnefit to malaysians now. im so sad of this.. congrats pua.. just stay in taiwan =)

  17. kupih on October 14th, 2010 11:34 am

yaa..u should stay in taiwan..even u’re malaysian but malaysia just want ur glory, money… congrats pua…

  18. cibailang on October 26th, 2010 1:18 pm

well, malaysia does not have the kind of environment for technopreneurs like him to succeed, hence, his success was largely attributed to Taiwan’s education system, like it or not. And a funny but true reason was also that without the kind of education discrimination, he would not have created this thing.

So instead of saying that Malaysia loses a bright person, we should just be gladful that he made our file sharing all possible in today’s world and hopefully he can make it so big that one day our government needs to go to him to beg him to build a factory in Malaysia, which he already did.

Sometimes the environment plays a huge part, and in this case, it clearly is.

  19. JBJ Sabah on April 13th, 2011 11:43 am

Its really2 a total loss for Malaysia…Everything is a ‘total-loss’ for Malaysia as long as BN/UMNO is in power, esp with the ‘PERKASA’ thing!!

  20. Fant on April 28th, 2011 3:25 am

ohh damm…if Mr Puah come to malaysia and invented this tech..wahh~~!!! Malaysian will be RICH!!!

  21. Nicholes Lim on May 18th, 2011 4:54 pm

It’s better for Pua to convert his nationality to Taiwanese. If in Malaysia..all his money will goes to corruption…no “kopi money” no business in Malaysia.

  22. ukchen on June 1st, 2011 5:48 pm

Haiz, what a waste. Here the Malaysian government is pushing hard to get the talents to come back but the thing is that due to redtape, political and agenda before every project. This talents won’t come back. Talents are lost and they have to find footing elsewhere outside the country to expend and get people to appreciate their invention. MSC need to have foresight on the technology and patent the local creates. It may not be now but this technology might turn into good use in the future.

  23. letsbefair on June 8th, 2011 9:35 pm

Sorry if I seem to pour cold water over this article. But I always believe in the phrase “The truth will set you free”.
Call it any name you want, Pendrive, Thumbdrive, DiskOnKey, Data Traveller, Extreme Contour, Cruzer Drive ect. The original patent for this invention whereby a flash memory chip is connected to a USB port is from an Isreali company named M-System. The man who invented this device is Mr. Dov Moran.

What Pua did was to use his knowledge he acquired to commercially produce another brand called Pendrive. His achievement no doubt is commendable (Its beyond my wildest imagination if I could achieve what he did).

The fact remains. For as long as our politicians comes from UMNO and who rule over this land “Race and Religion” will always be their battle cry and their main national policy…

Having say that I believe there wil be more Pua’s in the future and our stupid government will not give a damn!

I believe all of us love our country Malaysia however, the system & leaders of the country are just discouraging people and constantly very frustrating.

Another talent lost. Am quite discouraged and sadden to see this.

  25. ColdSoul on June 23rd, 2011 1:43 am

Yeah malaysia lost another talented man!!!!.
And recently Malaysia going backwards in Technology. Block most websites etc…. even MSC Bill of Guarantees clause 7 stated :-
“To ensure no censorship of the Internet.”

msc malaysia missed one attribute in their arsenal of r&d:
    thinking positive and long term

  27. stanley on October 9th, 2011 4:27 pm

In fact, the government not much care about non-bumi, all talented are gone and migrated. Many talented Chinese have their own invention and marketing plan but lack of fund. Namewee is one of the example. Slowly, more business by local entrepreneur will be taken over by government, as you can see, Robert Kuok(sugar king), and soon, Sp Setia…

  28. Joseph on January 31st, 2012 11:37 am

It’s really annoying to note that such talent is not looked into. In this 21st Century why must there be division among races, religion, colour and culture. Most people are educated wheather they are Bumiputera, Chinese, Indians or other minorites these days, Basically they should have an open mind or concept to except ideas. What does it prove to the world when most Malaysians leave the Country for greener pasteurs abroad? There is so many talented people in Malaysia who is not given a chance to come up in life.
